The Gospel

John 3:16 - For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. John 17:2-3 - [Just as] You have granted Him power and authority over all flesh (all humankind), [now glorify Him] so that He may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him. And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

Power Thoughts: 12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind (Book Preview)

Using themes from other books in her ample catalogue--worry, perseverance, managing emotions--Meyer breaks her suggestions into several digestible lists, backed by a "Power Pack" of Bible verses at the end of each chapter. She offers enthusiastic encouragement, but also requires action, here in the form of practice, discipline, and continual meditation on the 12 motivational thoughts. Critics of the positive thinking movement (Meyer obliquely acknowledges a debt to the pioneering Norman Vincent Peale) will continue to find downsides in this book, among them failure to sufficiently acknowledge the pain of suffering and an ignorance of intractable mental illness. Critics of Meyer will say she sounds like an infomercial ("You will see amazing results"). Yet her many fans will continue to appreciate her upbeat attitude and her ability to offer practical tips on the toughest topics.

In Pursuit of Peace: 21 Ways to Conquer Anxiety, Fear and Discontentment (Book Preview).

Drawing on the lessons she learned through personal experience and from the Bible, Meyer supplies readers with 21 "peacekeeper" tips—some more practical than others—such as "Trust the Lord of Peace," "Stay Supernaturally Relaxed," "Avoid Financial Pressure" and "Beware of Idle Talk."

Above all else, however, she emphasizes that peace can be found by staying in good standing with God (your Righteousness in Christ Jesus), accepting oneself and making peace with others.

As in her usual can-do (all things are possible in Christ Jesus) style, Meyer challenges her fellow Christians to be courageous, confident and discerning, and she invokes Bible passages to drive home her message. She’s also brutally honest about her own weaknesses, which lends further credence to her teachings. While Meyer doesn’t offer much advice that hasn’t been covered by countless other self-help books, her tale of personal growth should inspire her countless fans.
